If an internal pipework system has not been used for some time, for example if a building has remained vacant, then it is important to re-commission the system before it comes back in to use. A disinfection (chlorination) of the pipework system will ensure that any debris which may have settled there and any stagnant water is flushed out, removing any potential contaminants.
When water is left stagnant for a period of time, it also allows harmful bacteria such as Legionella to proliferate – particularly in hot and cold water tanks. Chlorination and cleaning of all dormant water systems is essential before they are put back into use.
It is also essential to return to sites where they may have been some new developments considering pipework installation. When pipes are exposed, particularly on dirty sites, they must undergo the full cleaning process again if any constructional changes have been made. It doesn’t take a lot for stones and debris to infiltrate a pipe, or for biofilm to form around the inner diameter. Samples must then be sent to certified labs to determine the water is once again at the standards set by BS8558.
WHS are respectful and considerate when it comes to British Standards and preventing/solving water hygiene issues, especially when it comes to drinking/potable water. We’re happy to re/visit a site where our services may be needed, whatever the instance.
